BABY SHOWER GAMES

One of the most fun aspects of a baby shower is the games. By playing a baby shower game, you make strangers feel more comfortable while having a great time. To make the games a bit more competitive between the guests, have some type of small prize for the winner.

You will find quiet people that come out of their shells eager to win. The goal with each baby shower game is to get the guests laughing and interacting with one another. What you want to avoid with baby shower games are those that take too long to explain or games that are difficult to figure out.

You will probably feel nervous about putting games together since obviously, you want them to be well received and a huge success. To help reduce the level of stress, we have chosen games that are perfect for all baby showers, whether 10 people or 50!

TRADITIONAL BABY SHOWER GAMES

The games in this section are those that have been around for a while and continue to add fun to any baby shower.

Diaper Door

To get the baby shower started, this is an excellent first game. Prior to the start of the shower, you will need to cut small triangles out of white paper (copy paper, white napkins, or even white felt work perfectly). On the inside of one “diaper”, place a small amount of Dijon mustard (to resemble a newborn baby’s poo).

These triangles will then be folded into the shape of a diaper by folding two of the corners inward, allowing them to touch. Then, fold the last corner from the bottom up over the two corners and pin them together with a very, small safety pin.

Once all the diapers are assembled, place them in a basket. As each guest arrives, he or she would take a diaper and without looking on the inside, pin it onto the clothing. These diapers will be worn throughout the party. While some of the guests may understand the game, others will have no idea. Your job is not to tell!

Once the shower begins to wind down, have all the guests open their diaper. The person who has the dirty diaper is the winner, receiving the main door prize! Excellent options would include dinner for two at a nice restaurant, a full-spa treatment, or a movie package (two tickets, two popcorns, and two drinks).

Baby Shower Tray Game

For this baby shower game, you will need a tray and about 20 to 25 small items that would be associated with a baby. For instance, you might choose socks, rattle, teething ring, baby book, thermometer, baby food jar, washcloth, diaper pins, piggy bank, spoon, and so on. With everyone sitting around a circle, pass the tray with all the items on it around the room. ( baby shower guests)

Once the last person has had time to view all the items, put the tray out of sight. Then, go back to the person that first viewed the tray and see how many items he or she can name. Keep in mind that someone will need to keep track of each person’s guess with the use of a check off list. That way, you will know the person or persons that win.

Gifts could include something like scented candles, bath soaps, or boxed chocolates. Finally, after the came is over, all the items on the tray are then presented to the mother-to-be!

Smell Game

For the Smell Game, you will take six different jars of baby food, each different. Put the contents into plastic bowls so the content is unknown. Next, each guest will sniff the bowl and then make his or her guess as to the flavor of the food. The person that gets the most right is the winner. Again, small gifts would be great but not necessary.

Clothespin Roundup

With this game, you would hand each guest a clothespin as he or she arrives, asking that it be clipped some where on the clothing. Since a pregnant woman has difficulty crossing her legs, the focus of this game is that no guest can cross his or her legs throughout the entire shower.

If a guest catches someone doing this, the clothespin is taken away and added to that person’s clothing. At the end of the shower, the person with the most clothespins wins a small prize. A variation of this game is to ban the word “baby” throughout the baby shower.

Baby A to Z

You will need to have papers prepared prior to the start of the shower with letters A to Z listed down a row. When you get ready to play the game, each guest will be handed a piece of paper with the letters and a pencil.

Then, tell each guest that he or she will have one minute to write a word next to the corresponding letter that relates to a baby. Set the timer and let the fun begin. The person that has the highest number of words and the most creative words within that minute would be the winner.

Multiple Guess

For this game, you want to think of 10 questions that will be asked to each guest. The goal of the game is to see who knows the mother-to-be best. For example, you would have questions like, “If the baby were to get sick at 2:00 in the morning, who would Sue call first – (a) Her sister, (b) Her mother, or (c) Her doctor.”

Be sure to have the parents of the expectant couple involved in this came to create a little more fun. The answers will be tallied and the one that had the most right wins.

Diaper Bag

This game is similar to the Tray Game but with a twist. With this, guests would sit in circle with a diaper bag in the middle. The first person would say, “I have the diaper bag and in it, I placed a teething ring”, placing the bag back in the middle.

The second person picks up the bag and repeats the first person but says, “I have the diaper bag and in it, I placed a washcloth.” The third person repeats the first two people and then adds something of his or her own. This goes on around the circle but once a guest forgets one of the items added, they are disqualified from the game. You may end up with a couple of winners but the game is fun.

Word Creation

Make a list of words that relate to pregnancy and babies and post them on a piece of poster board for all the guests to see. Then, hand each guest a piece of paper and pencil, set a timer for three minutes, and have them try to make as many new words out of each word presented as possible within the timeframe. The guest with the most legitimate words wins.

Noah’s Ark - Popular Baby Shower Game

On one side of a piece of paper, write the alphabet in big, bold letters. Then, next to each letter, draw two lines. For this game, the guests would write down the name of two animals for every letter that corresponds with that letter.

In other words, for the first letter “A”, you would have something like “Anteater” and “Aardvark”. Now, set your timer for about three minutes and have everyone write as quickly as possible. The person that completes the task ahead of others is the winner.

Taster’s Choice

Of all baby shower games, this is one of the funniest. In this case, you will need about eight to ten different jars of baby food with the labels removed and replaced with a number so you can keep track. Now, on paper plates draw eight to ten circles with the corresponding number on top of each.

Place a small dollop of the food into each circle and have the guests taste the food. Their goal is to identify the flavor of food but they must be exact. The person that identifies the most wins. With this game, you would want to know about any guests who are vegetarians or have some type of food allergy.

Pins and Rice

With this, a bowl is filled about three-quarters with dry rice. Next, add in about 10 to 20 safety pins. For the guests wanting to play, they would be blindfolded to see how many safety pins could be removed in one minute. The guest who finds the most pins is the winner of the game. Does this sound too easy? Keep in mind that pins and rice feel the same, especially when blindfolded.

Baby Animal Names

On a piece of poster board, write down the following grown animal names plus any others you would like to add. Then, set the timer for two minutes and have each guest write down the name for the baby associated with each animal. The person with the most correct answers wins.

Baby Name

If the expectant parents know the baby’s sex and have the name chosen, this game is fun. With this, write the name of the baby out on pieces of paper on the left side and blank space for guests to write. Then, set the timer for two minutes and have them make sentences out of each letter. For example, if the baby’s name will be Chad, you might see sentences that are messages to the baby such as the following:

If the name were Jamie, then you might write:

Baby Ice Cubes

Prior to the baby shower, freeze ice cubes with miniature plastic babies in each one. When it comes time for refreshments, use the special cubes. The guest whose ice cubes melt completely first wins.

Remind guests that they cannot cheat by handling the ice cube, adding warm water to their drink, sucking on the ice cube, etc. To make this work best, freeze the actual plastic dolls prior to dropping them into the ice cube trays.

Unwrapping Presents

When the expectant mother or couple gets ready to open gifts, have a timer nearby that is set every five minutes. The guest whose gift is being opened when the bell goes off wins some type of small prize. If the baby shower is small, you can set the timer to two or three minutes.

Baby Photos

Request that each guest bring one of his or her own baby photos. Then, attach all of the photos to several pieces of poster board, setting them around the room. Above each photo, place a number.

Instruct all of the guests to look at the photos throughout the shower and try to figure out which guest matches up to which photo. The guests can keep track with a paper and pen and then the guest that has the most photos identified correctly would win.

Famous Babies

For this game, you will make a list of about 20 famous people on a poster board, placing it where all the guests can see. You might have people like Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Hudson, President Bush, Courtney Cox, and others.

Then, make sure every guest has a piece of paper and a pen. Set the timer for five minutes and see how many people can come up with the correct name of that person’s own baby. The guest that guesses right the most would be the winner.

A variation of this game would be to write down about 20 television shows, asking the guests to name the character names of the children. You can use both old and new shows, mixing it up. For example, you could use the Brady Bunch (Greg, Peter, Bobby, Marsha, Jan, and Cindy); Leave it to Beaver, That 70s Show, Married with children, and so on.

Jack and Jill

For this baby shower game, you would write out a list of about 10 nursery rhymes on the left side of the page. Copy off enough so every guest will have a sheet of his or her own to try to match the exact title to each.

For example, write out the nursery rhyme “Jack and Jill went up a hill to fetch a pail of water, Jack fell down and broke his crown and Jill came tumbling after.” Obviously, the title for this one is Jack and Jill but you would be surprised at how many people miss the answers.
